Each disc from this hefty box set presents a major work by Dutch violist-composer Ig Henneman, and taken together they provide both a complete picture of her art and a strong narrative of its development. Issued in celebration of her 65th birthday (and her 25th year in creative music), the box includes a deluxe booklet that provides an exceptionally intelligent guide to the recordings and an overview of Henneman’s music. The recordings include her first album as a leader, issued here for the first time on CD, as well as major releases by each of the bands that have figured most prominently in her art—the Ig Henneman Tentet and String Quartet, the Queen Mab Trio, and her duet with life-partner and reed player Ab Baars. What the box reveals is an artist incapable of remaining satisfied with any music that lies strictly within the boundaries of any one style. Her working free of received wisdom to an individual voice and clarity of vision is the exhilarating story told by the discs. (...) (...) Wat zo'n reis oplevert is een tucht mijdende, pseudo-anarchistische wordingsgeschiedenis zonder eindbestemming, vol zijpaden waarin de vrije geest altijd een uitweg ziet. Dit is verzetsmuziek. Je hoort wat erin meeklinkt: contramine, nieuwsgierigheid, een gezonde avant-gardementaliteit die anno nu tegen alle schoonheidsregels in toevallig ook eens balsem voor de ziel is.

Het album biedt een mooi overzicht van Hennemans ervaringen en bewandelt een boeiende grens tussen compositie en improvisatie. Als dwarsdoorsnede van een loopbaan is Ig Henneman Collected alleszins verstandig samengesteld. Het laat de evolutie horen van een artieste die van meet af aan de grens tussen compositie en improvisatie bewandelende op een eigenzinnige manier en steeds nadrukkelijker op zoek is gegaan naar haar eigen muzikale taal, hier in toenemende mate nauwer aansluitend bij de improvisatie.
